TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES & COURSES FOR CREW ADULTS & YOUTH
Under the new administration of Chief Scout Executive Robert Mazzuca, training formats and requirements of all registered
adults in the Boy Scouts of America has been rapidly changing. It is anticipated that there is much more yet to
be unveiled.
The trend has shifted to maximizing technology and the internet, and the downsizing of training courses offered at the council
level. Please visit this page frequently to view changes made to training requirements that
specifically affect Venturing Crew leaders, and Scouting in general.
The first step for any Venturing Crew leader is to visit the national BSA E-learning web site, where you can view the current
courses you can complete on-line. Click on the web site address below.
Everyone that takes any of the BSA E-learning training courses must create an account. Logging on to the site requires two
things - An email address and a password. PLEASE NOTE that the email address can only be used by
ONE person. {One email address
for two people WILL NOT WORK!} The national office knows this and says they are trying to remedy this. Public libraries
are free
use locations, some with on-line time limits, and all one has to do is create an email account using Yahoo or Gmail, which are
free. The official Boy Scouts of America training courses that can be completed are:
- Fast Start Training - For leaders in a Cub Pack, Scout Troop, Varsity Team, Venturing Crew or if you are
a Unit Commissioner.
THESE ARE NOT REQUIRED to be considered FULLY trained. They are specifically designed to provide a brief overview of the program
you are currently involved in.
- Youth Protection Training - Now REQUIRED for all currently registered leaders and new joining leaders. Certification for this training lasts 2 years.
- Venturing Youth Protection Training - Now REQUIRED for all currently registered Crew adult leaders and new joining leaders. Certification for this lasts 2 years.
- Scout Parents Unit Coordinator - This is NOT an official registered position in a unit, but is designed
for one or more
individuals registered in a Unit Cmte. to assist in the organizational support of a unit through recruiting efforts and the
involvement of parents in the operations of a unit.
- Staffing the District Committee - Designed specifically for all registered leaders of a district committee.
This does not include the Commissioner Corps!

- This is Scouting - This REPLACES New Leader Essentials! If you’ve taken N.L.E., then you do not need to take
“This is Scouting”. This course is required as PART of becoming Fully Trained. This course applies to all programs and all
registered leader positions. Once taken, you do not have to take it again.
- Troop Committee Challenge - This is also the current course for Venturing Crew Committees as well. This course is required as PART of the training to become Fully Trained.
Currently, the two courses above are no longer encouraged to be conducted by a local council. This is under review by the Council Training Committee.
Required Training on Tour Permits - This includes YPT as well!
