Introduction:
Welcome to Youth Protection Training (YPT) for Adult Leaders and Parents. YPT online
training was developed by the national council to facilitate the growing need for training
which directly promotes the safety of our Scouts and Scouters while taking advantage of our
growing technological resources. By having this training online, leaders and parents may use
its resources according to their schedule.
Some things to be Aware of:
- By clicking on the images below, you can see larger versions of them
- To complete the training on-line, you will be using the new BSA E-learning site. To access this site, you will
need to create an account (details found below), which will save your progress (in case you are interrupted) and
allow you to store your training records.
- An adult leader, who is YPT certified, is now required to be present at all Scouting activities.
- Please remember while this training is complete and gives you full certification, our council training
committee will continue to provide Youth Protection Training at all possible venues in order to provide
leaders with an opportunity for further interaction with a certified YPT Trainer. The Trainer will be able
to address questions and concerns not covered by this online training.
Getting Started:
To begin, click on the link at the bottom of this page, or continue on to learn about the program. You may jump
to the bottom by clicking
HERE.
Log-In & Registration: As of May of 2006, the BSA has transitioned to a new system called
"E-Learning." This new system adds many new functions to our on-line training capabilties. To get started, you will need to
create an account. When you first click on the link to the E-learning site, you will see in your web browser a screen similar
to what appears on the left. You will see above the boxes you can type in a line that reads "If you do not have an account
on this site, click here to create an account." Click on that link and you will see a page that looks like the following:
On this page (right), the items that appear in red are mandatory. It is recommended that you fill in
all of
the details as accurately as possible, however, to make sure that the training is properly credited to you in the Scouting
system once you complete the training. Your Person ID, which is found on your Scouting registration card that your unit
leader should provide to you once your unit is given it's annual charter, is an important part of the registration
process (though not required). If you use this number, the system accurately matches you to your records in the Scouting
system. Finally, under the "Council #" drop down selection, choose "Five Rivers Council #375". Click "Submit" when you
are finished filling in the details. You will be sent back to the login page where you can login using your new
account.
Once you log in, you will proceed to the "General" section using the link on the navigation bar along the top of the
page. See below for an example of this screen. Under the "Supplemental Training" section on this page, click on the
link for Youth Protection Training to get started.
How Long Does The Course Take?
Online YPT takes about an hour if you have the training audio on. If you deactivate the audio portion of the training, you can
move faster. The audio portion of the training simply reads what is printed on the screen.

To deactivate the audio portion, click on the speaker icon with the waves coming out and the word "sound" next to it that
appears in the top right hand corner of the content area (looks like the image on the left). The button will change to a
speaker without any waves, at which time, the audio portions of the training will cease. Remember, the audio being enabled
only reads the contents of the screen to you.
What Does the Training Cover?
YPT Online is split into five categories:
Introduction, Policies, Recognizing and Reporting Abuse, Scenarios, and a Test.

The Training itself is conducted through a series of explanations, interactive policy exercises and scenarios which the
user interacts with during the training program to discover the best way to handle real life situations. BSA Youth Protection
training, while similar to other child protective trainings is specific to Scouting and
cannot be replaced by any other
training. YPT covers the precise and detailed Scouting protection policies and reporting procedures that every leader must know.
What Happens at the End?
When you complete your training, there is a test. Here you will verify your youth protection knowledge. Upon passing the
test, you will see a screen that looks like the screenshot at right. If you missed any questions, the answer that you
selected will be displayed alongside the correct answer. The web page directs you, via the text in the organge box to
close your current window, and return to the Elearning website, where, when you hit the refresh or reload button on
your web browser, the Youth Protection Training will appear as completed (a different colored circle will appear next
to the Youth Protection Training link.

When
you click on the link, you will see a page that looks like the image on the left. If you click on the "View Certificate"
link, you will be displayed with a training card that contains your name that you can print out as proof of your taking
the course. A sample appears below. This certificate will be stored on the E-learning site under your account
idefinitely, but it is still recommended that you keep a printed copy with you as proof of your
certification.
You are now finished!
Some Final Notes:
- If all of your account details when you first register are correct, your record of having taken the Youth
Protection Training will be posted to your training records in the system within a few days. However, please
plan ahead - if you have a campout and need a YPT certified adult, please don't wait until the night before
to do the online training.
