November 30, 2016

It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I share the news of the untimely passing of Five Rivers Council President Thomas K. Meier.

Tom had a lifelong passion for and commitment to Scouting, as evidenced by his years of service as a Scout, Volunteer Unit Leader, Five Rivers Council Board Member and current leadership role as the Five Rivers Council Board President.

An Eagle Scout, Tom was recognized with the National Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Eagle Scout Award in 2014 for his service to Scouting and the community.  Tom’s legacy of leadership, service and character in Scouting, as President of Elmira College and behind the scenes in the community are testaments to his devotion to making a positive difference in the world.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom’s wife, Mila, and his entire family during this time. Details regarding memorial services will be forthcoming.

As Tom would have had it, Council operations continue, but the Five Rivers Council family has lost a dear friend.

Yours in Scouting,

Gary Decker, Scout Executive

UPDATE

Five Rivers Council Family,

We would like to have a Scouting presence at the calling hours and funeral of Council President Tom Meier.

Scouts and Scouters are invited to attend the calling hours or the funeral. The Calling Hours are today from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at McInerny Funeral Home (502 W. Water Street in Elmira) and the Funeral is tomorrow at Grace Episcopal Church (375 W. Church Street in Elmira).

To show our support for the Meier family and to honor Tom’s Scouting legacy, we would like to line the sidewalk outside of Grace Church on Saturday with Scouts and Scouters in uniform. The funeral is scheduled for 11am and is expected to last approximately 1 hour. We are asking all available Scouts and Scouters to show up at the church in uniform by 11:30am and to take a spot along the sidewalk in either direction. Please allow Pack, Troop, and Crew 101 (Tom’s grandson’s units to take the location closest to the church).

Please be advised that Church Street is a busy area and there may be a considerable amount of traffic at the time of the funeral. It is imperative that Scouts and Scouters stay on the sidewalk and are under adult supervision at all times. The safety of our Scouts and Scouters is priority #1.

Thank you to everyone planning to attend on Saturday and for those that are showing their support to the Meier family in other ways.

Please continue to keep the Meier family in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you.

Yours in Scouting,

Gary A. Decker
