Mansfield University Design Students and HLA Marketing Assist Twin Tiers Boy Scout Adventure Camps

Camps Gorton (NY) and Brulé (PA) a Primary Focus for Five Rivers Council in 2014

Elmira, NY, January 15th, 2014 – Graphic Design students at Mansfield University recently contributed to the process of rebranding the two popular Five Rivers Council, BSA adventure facilities, Camp Gorton and Camp Brulé.  With the design and PR assistance of Howell Liberatore & Associates, Inc. the two new logos will be unveiled in early 2014 as the first phase in a yearlong Adventure in Membership campaign.

As part of a co-op emphasis in the Graphic Design program, students worked directly with Five Rivers Council executives and other stakeholders to research both camps; their history, geography, unique qualities, educational/experiential infrastructure, and more.  Out of the research program each student designed and presented three unique logo design concepts.  Five Rivers Council has selected a leading design concept and will work with Elmira, NY based marketing and communications agency Howell Liberatore & Associates, Inc. to make final design edits and roll out the two new logos in early 2014.

“Both camps are nationally recognized for their rich history and offerings to the Scouting community and the public.  However, each camp has evolved to offer completely unique experiences,” stated Five Rivers Council Scout Executive, Bill McCahill. “Representing the camps in one icon proved very difficult and I think the students learned a lot and ended up doing an exceptional job!”

The Graphic Design major at Mansfield University is a comprehensive program within a small, liberal arts university. A tremendous amount of individual attention is given to students, from professors and advisors, providing guidance for the major’s two distinct tracks in print and motion graphics. The program, which is rooted in the Mansfield Creed of character, scholarship, culture, and service, is positioned in the Art Department. The Graphic Design program incorporates the disciplines of art, marketing, and business—creating a well-rounded understanding of the field of graphic design, as it is the voice that speaks to and through these distinct disciplines. Students studying in this program will complete an internship or a community-based practicum project, as well as a senior capstone exhibition or presentation, before receiving their degree.

“I could not be more proud of our ten talented graphic design students and I applaud them and, equally so, their Professor, Michelle Schlegel, for her consistent push to find meaningful, real-world co-op programs,” said Mansfield University President, Alum, and retired Brigadier General (USAF), Francis Hendricks.  “Professors like Michelle and talented students like those involved with this co-op are helping to usher in the new era at Mansfield University.“
